Interview with Jeremy Levi

Finding high-quality health-related products is no easy task. There are too many factors to consider including the history of the company which is making the products you will ultimately use. There are a lot of players in the industry but few of them manage to stand out from the crowd. One company which does manage to stand out is Mars Med Supply. It is basically the e-commerce division of the esteemed Garden State Medical Supply Company which has a history of delivering quality products for over 25 years now.

We were lucky enough to get in touch with Mars Med Supply team and Jeremy was gracious enough to answer all our queries.

  1. What was the inspiration behind opening an e-commerce store which caters specifically to the needs of people who’re in need of medical care?

Great question and I’d like to start by saying thank you for the opportunity to do this interview.

Mars Med Supply is part of a company that has been selling medical supplies and equipment for 25 years, almost all offline. The decision to start selling online was twofold: it’s still a relatively untapped market online, and many of those selling online are selling cheap products of low quality that either break easily or simply don’t do the job.

While people are knowledgeable when it comes to buying products such as clothing and electronics, and are able to stay away from being ripped off by the cheap products being sold online, the same can’t be said for medical supplies since they aren’t necessarily a product which you purchase all the time. When an ailment hits and you need to buy something, you simply aren’t able to become knowledgeable overnight.

What we try to accomplish is to fill this void; provide a quality product while, at the same time, educating consumers what to look for when shopping for medical products online. We only sell quality products and field calls, all the time, from people who are looking at a product online and are confused by what they see. In turn, we are able to guide them to make the best decision for their health.

  1. What do you think is the most popular category of products and what do you think is the reason why the most number of people is looking for medical help in this particular area?

What we’ve found is that people are still not comfortable buying all medical help online because of the lack of education. What we have found is that people are willing to buy bracing products due to their relatively low cost and that most of them function pretty much in the same way. While there are definitely different qualities of products, even in bracing, the gap to become knowledgeable isn’t that great and people are able to bridge it and make good purchases. Our most popular braces are elbow, knee and ankle braces, as well as plantar fasciitis night splints.

  1. How has the response of customers been to both your products and the idea of being able to buy medical supplies from an online store?

Overwhelmingly positive. Where I think people have been most receptive is on the products where we are able to provide easy to digest content that provides education. It helps buyers make the right decision and keeps our return rates low. We average return rates below 1%. As for buying medical supplies online, the world is trending towards purchasing almost everything online. While the transition to buying medical supplies online has lagged a little behind some other categories, it is trending in the direction of the rest of commerce: e-commerce will be king.

  1. Your company also sells in bulk, how has been the response of the resellers to your online offerings?

The response has been good from all of our wholesale partners; we have podiatrists buying night splints for their patients; hospitals buying back braces for their patients, and also suppliers and resellers buying our product in bulk to resell to their customers. The trick to keeping bulk customers coming back is to make sure you’re offering a competitive price and never running out of stock. Buyers will move away from you if you are running out of stock consistently.

  1. What are your plans for the future and where do you see the company and its e-commerce store in a few years?

My favorite question because it lets me share our vision. What we want to do is provide education and take out much of the confusion that there is when it comes to purchasing unfamiliar products online. I know I’m repeating but buying the right product for your aching back, inflamed knee or bunions can be daunting.

With the hectic lives led by virtually everyone today people are more likely to self-diagnose an ailment rather than go to a doctor, and then go online to try and find the product or treatment for their diagnosis.

We are here to help them in a responsible way. Once they are looking for a product we want to help them find the right one so they are happy, healthy and are able to live life to the fullest. That is our ultimate goal.
